Ashland Reduces Cost and Improves Safety with BROWZ
Feb 11, 2016
Ashland Inc. is a global leader in providing specialty chemical solutions to customers in a wide range of consumer and industrial markets. With over 10,000 employees and sites in 100 countries, workplace safety is a top concern. The company also has over 1300 contractors working on a temporary basis, mostly in over 40 manufacturing and R&D sites across North America.
Critical to ensuring workplace safety has been the pre-qualification of these contractors. In order for Ashland to successfully prequalify potential and existing contractors, a robust contractor prequalification program with numerous checks and balances was needed.
Supplier compliance was initially tracked on paper, but Ashland soon realized they needed a partner in the process. Ashland’s contractors and suppliers span wide range of risk which adds to the complexity. It was important to ensure the prequalification process provided assurance to Ashland but was also cost efficient and simple for contractors. This is where BROWZ came in.
“BROWZ could do everything we needed, but they also had the flexibility to support our unique business.” Jon Scheibe, Ashland Global Life Safety Programs Manager
BROWZ helped Ashland through the entire process of setting up a contractor prequalification process. The first major step was meeting with key stakeholders. A working group was established to develop the qualification criteria to establish the highest possible safety outcomes for Ashland without being onerous for the contractors. BROWZ developed detailed timelines and project plans that would direct the group over the coming months and provided consultative direction for Ashland based on best practices in the industry.
Today, procurement and EHS personnel at Ashland access contractor pre-qualification data in a dashboard, which shows immediately whether contractors have met all necessary criteria. It also shows industry averages right next to a contractor’s metrics.
BROWZ continues to provide dedicated support staff to follow up with Ashland’s contractors to ensure they’re meeting criteria, and that insurance and contracts are all up-to-date.
“BROWZ easily paid itself back in the first year, many times over.”
The business impacts for Ashland have been far-reaching, including return on investment in under one year, established consistency in contractor prequalification, improved relationships and interactions with contractors, and improved workplace safety overall.
“Partnering with BROWZ has enabled us to set that expectation up front, convey that to our contractors, and let them know how important EHS is to us.”
